Freedom of
Information
The Freedom of Information Act was enacted to produce a more transparent and accountable culture of government in Ireland. Any Irish citizen can request personal information held by any public body, and in cases where this is inaccurate can demand that it be changed. Citizens can also request a broad range of administrative and financial information from government departments and state-funded organisations, with the exception of a number of categories of sensitive material listed in the act.

Data Protection Act
The Data Protection Act protects the individual's right to privacy. It has been put in place to ensure that personal information is lawfully and fairly obtained, processed, protected and disclosed. It seeks to ensure that personal data about individuals is kept accurate and up-to-date and that there is no unauthorised disclosure of personal data.
The Data Protection Act also places a responsibility on organisations to dispose of records in both electronic and hard copy format once the purpose for which the information was gathered has been completed.
